Surrey Young Farmers
Aims
Surrey Young Farmers Clubs are part of a national
organisation of approximately 28,000 members. We
currently have 9 clubs
operating throughout Surrey, with our Junior clubs catering to the 10-16 age
range and our senior clubs, the 16 – 26 age range. Young Farmers clubs (YFCs)
seek to meet the needs of young people through educational, training and social
programmes that encourage personal development, community involvement and
concern for the environment.
Our young people are empowered to run their organisation
themselves through an established committee structure, running from clubs to
National Federation. At club
level this involves members annually electing club
officers, who have responsibility for the running of their club and programme.
Typically, clubs are involved in a wide range of activities from crafts, sports,
farm visits, and talks, to conservation projects, fundraising, quiz nights,
outdoor pursuits and night hikes.
The County Federation also provides members with the
opportunity to be involved in skills training, residential training weekends and
a comprehensive competitions programme. Furthermore, at regional and national
level,
members can tap into further training and international travel
opportunities.
In May, the Surrey Young Farmers run their annual Cowpie
Country Show in Betchworth, which attracts about 20,000 visitors. The show
holds a host of main ring attractions, livestock and YFC competitions. There
are up to fifty trade stands and a YFC marquee displaying examples of Young
Farmers’ work.
Members do not need to be involved in farming to be a Young
Farmer, just within the age range or 10 – 26. New members are always welcomed.
