After 100 years Crusaders becomes Urban SaintsCrusaders celebrated its centenary in 2006 making it older even than the Scouts. It now enters a new century with a new name and identity:
Urban Saints groups seek to present Jesus, the Bible and faith to young people through relevant, fun and challenging ways as well as giving them a forum in which to explore their issues. The groups are very relationship based with an extensive amount of mentoring and coaching taking place within the groups. A highlight for West Surrey is its annual camp during the May half term with around 150 on site at Waverly Abbey. The Surrey swimming gala in February in Epsom pool attracts around 150 swimmers some who compete regularly and some who find the race a bit more of a struggle! The starter has even been known to compete in a race he started. Urban Saints operate 31 groups across Surrey and interact with approximately 600 to 800 young people. Not only do the groups operate on a weekly basis but also take part in residentials, sporting events and outings. Approximately 260 volunteer leaders run the groups and we are building a network of volunteers to support the groups and activity program under the leadership of our new SE Regional Director Gary Mann (gmann@urbansaints.org). Gary lives in Epsom and was appointed in October 2006 having left BT. His role in addition to leading the support group is to help set the strategy for the SE of England particularly for developing the depth and breadth of the work.
