Aims
Skillway aims to work with pupils identified by their schools
as low academic achievers, both boys and girls, who find their education and
social progress restricted by their inability to work in large groups. These
youngsters can be unmotivated and disillusioned about their own capabilities.
By teaching manual skills in small groups, the Skillway
Project sets out to instill confidence and self-esteem in these students. The
project is based on a firm belief that young people enjoy what they can
successfully accomplish and that success breeds success.
Skillway has
been operating its skills workshops now for 8 years. We currently have two large
principal workshops with one operating mainly the timber-based projects and the
other as an engineering workshop. We have recently also converted an
outbuilding to form a Creative Art Block.
Skillway offers introductory training in many different
manual skills. These skills are taught by enthusiastic volunteers who wish to
pass on their talents to the next generation. Our students usually come to us
for one day a week, during their penultimate year at Secondary School. Working
in the workshop environment gives our students a greater feeling of being in the
adult world and subsequently they develop a more mature sense of responsibility
and a greater level of self-confidence.
Recently we have achieved accreditation and certification for
the work the students undertake at Skillway. This is obtained through the Open
College Network, a vocational-based learning accreditation with equivalencies to
NVQ courses.
